Police have recovered the bodies of a woman and her teenage granddaughter from Pabna's Ishwardi Upazila, reports bdnews24.com
The 65-year-old grandmother's bloodied body was found in her home's courtyard on Saturday, while her 15-year-old granddaughter's naked body was discovered in a nearby mustard field, according to Ishwardi Police Station chief OC Mohammad Mominuzzaman.
Police suspect the pair were killed late on Friday night after the grandmother resisted an attempt to abduct the teenager.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that assailants attempted to abduct the granddaughter late at night. When the grandmother intervened, they hacked the elderly woman to death with a sharp weapon. They then took the teenager to the adjacent mustard field, raped her, and strangled her before fleeing," said OC Moniruzzaman.
The victims were identified as Sufia Khatun, mother of Joynal Khan, and his daughter Jamila Akter. Joynal lives in Dhaka for work, leaving the pair at home alone.
Neighbours heard cries from the house in Bhabanipur Uttarpara village on Friday night but left when the noise stopped.
"This is an extremely barbaric double murder. Police are investigating the matter seriously. After inquest reports, the bodies were sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for postmortem. Multiple teams are working in the field to swiftly identify and bring the perpetrators to justice," Ishwardi Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Pranab Kumar said.
In the wake of the incident, the village of Bhabanipur is gripped by grief and extreme fear. Local residents are demanding quick arrests and exemplary punishment for those involved.
