FE Report | Tuesday, 2 June 2015

Green activists on Monday called for setting up of a 'chemical village' in non-residential area to save lives from fire incidents.
They made the call at a human chain programme organised at city's Nimtoli Sata Masjid Chattar, marking the Nimtoli tragedy.
Six rights organisations, including Green Club of Bangladesh (GCB) and Citizen Rights Movement organised the programme with Poribeshsammoto Bashjoggo Dhaka Bastobayon Porishad member secretary Mohammad Shahid in the chair.
The activists also demanded that the government should declare June 3 as Nimtoli Tragedy Day' and pay Tk 2.0 million in compensation to each family of the fire victims from the Prime Minister's Fund.
Even though 124 people were killed in the devastating fire at Nimtoli on June 03 in 2010, they said, the authority concerned is yet to take steps for relocation of chemical storerooms and factories to other areas.
M Inamul Haque, chairman of Water and Environment Institute, said until relocation, such industry in the area will have to be marked with red and blue to avoid accidents.
Ashish Kumar Dey, general secretary of GCB, Nurur Rahman Selim, presidium member of Ganatantrik Party, Tusher Rehman, secretary general of Citizens Rights Movement, also spoke at the programme.
