Green chilli price at record high in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, June 01: The price of green chilli has shot up abnormally in local markets of the district, which is reportedly much more than other parts of the country.
One kilogram of green chilli was selling at Tk 200 to 220, but it was Tk 70 to 75 a week back in the district, market sources said.
As a result, people could easily not buy the spice item as much they need.
Sahidul Mridha, 48, a bakali trader of Baro Bazar in the Gopalganj town, told The FE that the green chilli price has increased sharply as there is no sufficient supply of the spice item.
Azam Fakir of village Bedgram under Gopalganj Sadar upazila said he could not buy green chilli on Friday due to the abnormal rise in its price.
Sadim Sheikh, 80, a bakly wholesaler of Gopalganj Natunbazar in the town, he told The FE that they could not provide sufficient supply of green chilli to different markets in the district.
Abdul Kadir Sarder, deputy director, Agriculture in Gopalganj, told The FE that 225 hectares of land has been brought into green chilli cultivation with a production target of 405 tonnes, which normally meet up the demand of the local people.
"I think dishonest traders are guilty for the abnormal hike in the green chilli prices. They made a syndicate for more benefits," the DD said. He also alleged that the local market monitoring authorities have failed to take necessary steps to control the market.
