Gridlock on roads

Wednesday, 23 July 2014

With the approach of Eid, traffic congestion throughout the country is deteriorating day by day. We became hopeful when the authorities took some initiatives to curb the chaotic situation that we experience every year ahead of any big festival. We saw the DMP to install special device that would bar traffic to drive on reverse route, drives to remove illegal shops on street sides, and police action against makeshift Iftari selling stalls.
The communication minister himself declared it as a challenge to keep all roads and highways free from traffic congestion. The education ministry thought it was better to close schools and colleges and declare a vacation throughout the Ramadan. All these attempts were made to lessen traffic pressure for the city dwellers.
However, all efforts have turned futile and sufferings of people continue.
Some obvious causes that made our fate tied to traffic jam may be listed like this: the tendency to drive wrong way, most roads are too narrow, haphazard car parking, rickshaws crawling through the traffic,  rising number of cars, hawkers grabbing footpaths, jam-packed passenger busses stopping here and there.
We want relief from traffic jam. We expect the authorities to adopt new strategies in order to get rid of this awful situation.
