RAJSHAHI, Nov 22 (UNB): Sugarcane growers in the district are cultivating rabi crops this season giving up their traditional sugarcane farming to overcome the losses they incurred last season.
Sources said the marginal growers have started cultivating rabi crops instead of sugarcane as they incurred a huge loss due to pest attack and low price of the cane.
They said the price of sugarcane has come down in the local market due to sudden fall in the price of sugar.
The farmers of Bagha and Charghat upazilas said it took time to grow sugarcane but some varieties of rabi crops and vegetables had short growing time with minimum production cost.
Different rabi crops like potato, onion, wheat, garlic, mustard seeds and pulses are being cultivated widely on lands that had been particularly used for sugarcane farming.
