Growing repressive acts only to hasten govt’s fall: BNP

Wednesday, 30 April 2014

BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman Tuesday warned that the government's 'growing repressive acts' cannot suppress their movement as it will only hasten the Awami League (AL) regime's fall, reports UNB.
"It's not possible to suppress a movement with arms and repressive acts in a developing country. The more you (govt) will resort to killing, forced disappearance, repression and arrest, the greater pace our movement will gather to ensure your fall," he said.
The BNP leader was addressing a human chain programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Dhaka district unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal demanding the release of all the arrested BNP leaders and activists, including its standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and joint secretary general Amanullah Aman.
Accusing the government of capturing power by force, Noman said all the activities of the current regime are illegal as it is not elected by people's vote.
"This illegal Awami League regime is plotting to keep opposition leaders away from politics by resorting to killing, forced disappearance and repression. The current MPs are usurper, not the representatives of people. The people of Bangladesh do not consider them as members of parliament," he said.
Charging the ruling party with snatching people's right to freedom of speech, Noman alleged that the government is imprisoning BNP leaders and activists after implicating them in 'false cases' in its frantic bid to hang onto power.
bdnews24.com adds: A Dhaka Court Tuesday fixed June 8 the hearing on charge framing against BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 26 other leaders and activists of the party in three separate arson cases filed with the Paltan and Shahjahanpur police stations.
Metropolitan Magistrate Tarek Mainul Islam Bhuiyan fixed the date after a hearing on the time petitions filed separately by several accused in the case, including senior BNP leaders Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel who are now in jail.
Meanwhile, a judge was embarrassed during BNP leader Goyeshwar Chandra Roy's bail hearing.
The bench of High Court (HC) justices Naima Haider and Zafar Ahmed, however, granted bail to BNP leader Amanullah Aman Tuesday, also accused of the murder of Islamic Chhatra Shibir leader Mansur Pradhania.
