JHALAKATI, June 17 (UNB): Guava cultivators in the southern region may incur huge loss this year due to production shortfall caused by the fury of last year's severe cyclonic storm "Sidr".

Local sources said Sidr damaged some 60 per cent to 70 per cent guava trees which left an adverse impact on the guava cultivation.

Thousands of families of 12 villages in Jhalakati Sadar Upazila and 22 villages in Shwarupkathi Upazila of Pirojpur district depend on guava cultivation.

They produce guava worth about Tk 1.0 billion (100 crore) every year. But this year, the growers, apprehended of incurring huge loss due to the production shortfall.

"Guava cultivators are incurring loss for last few years because of attack by chhitpara disease in guava gardens and sidr attack worsened the situation," said Shib Shankar Mondol in Jhalakati Sadar Upazila who cultivated guava on two bighas of land.
