Haji Selim faces contempt of court
Sunday, 6 April 2014
The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking independent MP Haji Mohammad Selim to explain why contempt of court charge should not be drawn against him for flouting its order on illegal eviction from the historic Lalbagh Fort in Old Dhaka. Responding to a plea filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, an HC division bench comprising Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal came up with the rule, which is returnable in two weeks. Petitioner’s counsel Manjill Morshed said the HC delivered a verdict on October 26, 2011, passing an order to evict illegal occupation from Lalbagh Fort area. In compliance with the HC judgment, the authorities concerned on March 30 this year, launched an eviction drive to free the Fort area, but it was obstructed by contemnor Selim, a former local Awami League leader, according to a news agency.
