Half of missions fail to reach export targets

Twenty three out of 44 Bangladesh missions abroad failed to achieve their respective export targets set for the first quarter (July-September) of the current fiscal when country's export recorded nearly 30 per cent growth over the same period of the previous fiscal year, according to official data.
The export earning during the period under review was $5.02 billion against the target of $4.47 billion, the data of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) shows.
On the other hand, export earning between July and October of the current fiscal year was $6.72 billion compared to $4.89 billion of the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year, posting a growth of 37.35 per cent, according to statistics released by the Export Promotion Bureau early this week.
The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) at a meeting, scheduled to be held today (Wednesday) is expected to find out the reasons for the failure of the missions. The officials of the ministry will hold another assessment meeting next month to review the performance of foreign missions for the period of first four months (July to October) of 2010-2011, a top trade official said.
