Half the graduates unemployed

Wednesday, 16 September 2020

One in every four youths in Bangladesh has been jobless during the coronavirus crisis. An International Labour Organisation (ILO) survey has found that the rate of youth unemployment has doubled in the country. Even before the pandemic, hardly 50 per cent of the fresh graduates were absorbed in jobs. So, it is not possible in Bangladesh to estimate the accurate number of unemployed people now.
Still, the number doesn't show the human face of unemployment as every youth, along with his/her family, has a day-to-day struggle for survival. Bangladesh is grappling with a number of issues that have arisen as consequences of the coronavirus outbreak. However, creation of jobs can solve a lot of problems. The engagement of youths in productive activities may back the economy on to the growth path. It's important that the authorities concerned realised the urgency of creating jobs.
