The construction of Tipaimukh Dam needs to be stopped at any cost for the sake of protecting the livelihoods of a large number of people of both India and Bangladesh and for the betterment of the economy, environment and biodiversity of those areas.
The call came from a human chain organized by Save the Environment Movement or Paribesh Banchao Andolon (POBA) on Saturday.
Abu Naser Khan, Chairman of POBA, Dr. Halim Dad Khan, Secretary of POBA, Hafizur Rahman Mayna, Secretary of NASF, Ibnul Sayed Rana, Convener of Shommilito Jaladhar Rakkha Andolon, Advocate Suja Al-Faruq, General Secretary of Sunamganj Committee, Nazim Uddin, Secretary of Old Dhaka Development Forum, Md Akbar among others, participated in the human chain.
Mr Abu Naser Khan said, "Due to the Tipaimukh Dam, the harmful impacts on the general people of both India and Bangladesh will be same. If India builds the dam ignoring the International Law, then regional conflicts will start, economic crisis will deepen and biodiversity will be threatened. So the government should take a strong stance against it".
The speakers said that it was done by India without informing Bangladesh.
'Not only Bangladesh, the Indian environment and water experts have also expressed concern about the destructive impacts if this dam is constructed', added speakers.
