SYLHET, Feb 26: Construction of the Champarai-Hamham road in Moulvibazar district could not be completed though the project was started two years ago.
Sources wishing anonymity alleged that the contractor of the project used sub-standard bricks and other materials.
The road is important as it links renowned Hamham waterfall in Islampur union under Komolganj upazila, on the border with Tripura.
The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) asked the contractor for not using the sub-standard materials, but the warning went unheeded, said a number of locals.
Since the area is very remote and poorly communicated with the district and upazila headquarters, nobody is interested to look into the matter, alleged a number of locals.
The sufferings of common people knows no bounds during the upcoming rainy season.
The backward area came into limelight after Hamham waterfall on the remote Kurma forest site was discovered about 10 years ago.
At one stage, the LGED started improving the road and floated tender worth Tk 12.2 million under 1850 metre road construction scheme.
Works began in late 2017, but nobody is interested supervising the works at such a remote location, locals complained.
Chairman of Islampur Union Council Md Abdul Hannan Mia said complaint was lodged with the concerned officials, but there had been no result.
An official, however, claimed that they had asked the contractor to stop using low quality materials.
