Hamidul bags first gold for Bangladesh in SA Games

Hamidul Islam opened the precious gold account as he captured the first gold medal for Bangladesh at the 11th South Asian Games amidst big cheering in the -77 Kg category at the National Sports Council Gymnasium in the city Monday, reports BSS.
Bangladesh had something more to cheer at the end of the day as it became the second occasion when Bangladesh won both the Gold and Silver of an event apart from the discipline of shooting. Monoranjan Roy made it one and two positions for Bangladesh despite putting up impressive display he had to remain satisfied at a close second position with a silver medal.
Last time leaving aside shooting event, Bangladesh won gold and silver in 100 metre sprint way back in 1987 in Calcutta (Kolkata), India in SAF Games. Late Shah Alam won the gold while Shahanuddin won the silver in the coveted athletic event.
Big man Hamidul's five-year perseverance paid off as he found the light at the end of the tunnel when he won the gold with a total lift total of 257 Kgs to stamp his authority.
Hamidul who has been training hard for the last 13 months lifted 117 kg in the snatch and pulled out 140 Kg in the clean and jerk to take the total to 257 two Kgs more than his compatriot challenger Monoron-jon Roy.
Monoronjon Roy cleared 255 Kg, 120 in the snatch and 135 in the clean and jerk to grab the silver and Mohammad Mustafa Kamma of Afghanistan lifted 200 kg to finish third.
Hamidul was ecstatic after his gold winning feat. 'I don't have the words to explain the feelings. It is like a dream come true after a long wait. I have been trying to win the Gold for the country, not only for myself. I am happy that I have achieved the feat,' said Hamidul.
Hamidul however saw another point behind his success. 'I was really driven by the gesture of the Prime Minister when she called us to her residence, her request was admirable and I really got motivated by her gesture. Deep inside my heart I pledged to myself that this time I would leave no stone unturned to win the Gold for my beloved country, and thanks to Almighty Allah, at last I managed to achieve something for myself and the country,' said the ace weightlifter.
Hamidul was thankful to the Bangladesh Olympic Association also. 'They arranged the long term training and in the end it brought dividend. I hope the trend like this would continue,' said Hamidul.
Kutubuddin Ahmed, the secretary general of BOA, congratulated Hamidul on his feat.
