Handicraft makers demand 15pc export incentive

FE REPORT | Thursday, 4 July 2024

Handicraft manufacturers have called for a 15-percent cash incentive on their export earnings, arguing it is essential for the sector's survival.
At a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday, the Bangladesh Handicrafts Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Banglacraft) said handicraft exports had benefited from cash incentives since 2004, which were introduced in recognition of their potential.
According to handicraft makers, this policy supported gradual growth in the sector. But, the manufacturers did not fare well as subsidies dropped.
They said the government reduced the subsidy rates in the past two years, from 20 per cent to 8 per cent, largely impacting the manufacturers.
Banglacraft noted that, in March 2023, the 11th meeting of the National Committee on Handicrafts, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, directed a return to the previous 20 per cent incentive rate.
This directive has not been implemented, they claimed, adding that in fact, the incentive has been further reduced to 6 per cent for the current financial year (2024-25). Millions of artisans depend on the sector to maintain their livelihoods. So the sector should be given the necessary facilities, they said.
Banglacraft President SU Haider addressed the press briefing, while other leaders and members were also present.
