GOPALGANJ, Nov 14: Handicraft goods made by the rural women in the district have been contributing immensely to boosting the country's export basket.
In the 80s, the rural women here just helped men in making of handicraft items and the village middlemen marketed the products.
In the 90s, realising the importance of handicraft industry, the government started organising training programmes for the rural women for developing their skills.
The Women Affairs Directorate, Women Entrepreneurs Development Programme of BSCIC, Department of Youth Development and other government and non-government organisations played important roles in organising skill development training programmes for women.
Sensing the venture profitable, the city-based entrepreneurs fanned out into the rural areas of the district and set up village handicraft production units exclusively.
Besides, they also organised different workshops and training programmes for improving working skills and creating awareness among the rural women, so that these rural women folks can become self-reliant.
As a result, these rural women stepped out of the threshold and began their campaign to control the handicraft business in capital and other districts
Having been well-trained, presently these socially oppressed, landless and distressed village women are now making different types of exportable handicraft items and earning a healthy amount every month and thus, they have become self-reliant.
Satrang Jubo Bekar Mohila Samity, a women's organisation in the district, has so far provided hundreds of women with a month-long practical training on making handicraft items such as jute, cotton and woolen goods, doormat, tablemat, wall hanging, pillow cover, 'sheeka' , vanity bag, cap and 'shitalpati', etc.
