Haoar sluice gates should be repaired

Wednesday, 24 January 2018

IT is disconcerting to know that some farmers in Sunamganj cannot give proper attention to Boro cultivation because of excessive water flow. The area is now under water because of damage to 56 sluice gates in 28 haors. The majority of people of the area are engaged in agriculture and if the area remains under water, farmers cannot cultivate their lands and produce crops.
The government should undertake the responsibility to repair these sluice gates on a priority basis and protect people of the area from impending food crisis. There are many ways to store excess water and the government should negotiate both short-term as well as long-term methods to divert redundant water from the area to enable the farmers to cultivate their lands and produce boro crops.
