Friday, 20 June 2014

The Judge of Tribunal 5 in Dhaka hearing cases on Prevention of Repression against Woman and Children, has granted bail to Rahid Rahman, an alleged harasser. Rahid’s lawyer Masud Ahmed said the case was non-bailable but he did manage to secure it for his client by arguing that it not fall under Clause 10 of the Prevention of Repression against Women and Children 2003 (Amended) Law. Rahid had been detained from his Banani residence for having allegedly harassed, on June 15, cricketer Shakib Al Hasan’s wife, Umme Ahmed Shishir, at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium during a match against India. Shakib filed a case the following day with Mirpur police. During the hearing, lawyer Masud said, ‘Rahid is studying law in UK. He will do his Bar-at-law next. A man like him was in no way involved in the harassment or stalking. Others should be blamed for the incident.’ He said the case had been filed under the harassment clause but the incident details indicated stalking, added Masud. Journalists could not access the case documents, as the judge, Tanjina Islam, took them with her after granting the bail, according to bdnews24.com.
