Hartal continues peacefully in Kaliakoir

A half-day hartal is being observed in Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur district on Sunday. The shutdown programme, announced on Saturday by Kaliakoir upazila unit of Awami League protesting the killing of Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, former president of the upazila unit of Jubo League, is underway peacefully since 6:00am on Sunday. The hartal will end at 12:00pm. Vehicular movement on the streets remained suspended and shops closed for the shutdown. No long route bus left the upazila town. On Saturday from a demonstration, Mohammad Tofazzol Hossain Rana, publicity secretary of the upazila unit AL, called for the half-day lockdown protesting the murder. On Friday, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam was killed in a factional clash of the ruling party during a programme in Chandra in Kaliakoir marking the National Mourning Day and August 21 grenade attack anniversary. Police arrested two people on Friday night for their suspected involvement in the murder, according to UNB.
