Thursday, 27 March 2014
A daylong hartal, called for Thursday in Chapainawabganj district by the local unit of BNP-led 19-party alliance, is progressing peacefully since morning. No picketing by the opposition activists was seen anywhere in Chapainawabganj town or elsewhere as of filing this report at 11:00am. However, no long-route buses left the district town. Vehicular movement was less than normal on the town roads. An opposition activist was killed and at least eight people, including five schoolgirls, were injured in bomb attacks on Shibganj upazila Shaheed Minar on Wednesday morning when people were trying to place wreaths there to mark the Independence Day. Most of the educational institutions, super markets and private offices have remained closed. Owners of the roadside shops kept their shutters down during the strike. The shutdown was announced through a press release signed by Shahjahan Miah, the district unit BNP president, on Wednesday afternoon, according to UNB.
