Hartal underway in Khagrachhari

A daylong hartal, enforced by 'Santras O Chandabaji Protirodh Committee' (a platform to resist terrorism and extortion) protesting rise in terrorist activities and extortion in Khagrachhari is passing peacefully in the district on Tuesday. The committee announced the shutdown programme on Monday. The activists of the committee brought out a procession led by committee convener Rafiqul Islam. Most of the motorised vehicles remained off the roads and businesses remained closed. No long-route buses left the district town. Meanwhile, the dawn-to-dusk general strike enforced by ‘All-party Conscious Citizens’ Committee’ was observed peacefully in Manikchhari and Panchhari Upazilas on Monday protesting the killing of a teacher. On December 6, the headmaster of Manikchhari Collegiate High School, Chingsamong Chowdhury, also Upazila Awami League vice-president, was killed and a local leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS-Santu Larma faction) injured in a gun attack in Manikchhari Upazila, according to a news agency.
