Harvest of short duration paddy ends in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Nov 1: Harvest of short duration paddy has ended in all the seven upazilas of the district through desired production thus creating work opportunities for the day labourers.
Office sources said a total of 4,541 hectares of land were brought under different varieties of short duration paddy cultivation programme this year.
Of them, BINA-7 was cultivated on 2220 hectares of land, BRRI Dhan-39 on 1245 hectares, BRRI Dhan-33 on 1060 hectares and BU-1 on 16 hectares of land, sources said.
Abdullah Al Hasan Chowdhury, a short duration paddy cultivator, at Kata Fashitala area under Gobindaganj Upazila expressed his satisfaction over the production as he got about 4 metric tons of BINA-7 paddy from one hectare of land this year.
Crops production specialist of DAE Satya Brata Paul said the farmers were benefited economically by selling their paddy at high price as they harvested the varieties during the off season within 114 days from the sowing of seeds and about 30 to 45 days ahead of the normal harvesting period of other T-Aman paddy.
Talking to the FE the Deputy Director of DAE, M. Qurban Ali said the farm and day labourers of the northern districts including Gaibandha are usually jobless Ashwin and Kartik of Bangla year.
To help the farm labourers pass their days without hardships through creating working opportunities to them during the lean time and to encourage the growers to get expected production.
The farmers of the district are being motivated by the departmental officials to cultivate short duration paddies on the high and medium high land in large scale, he also said.
