Harvesting of garlic going on in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Apr 20: Harvesting of garlic continuing in Nilphamari district is to be completed within a week or so.
The cultivation of garlic is increasing in the district as its cultivation is profitable. Sources said it is possible to produce 40 maunds of garlic in one bigha (30 decimal) of land. The expenditure of garlic cultivation is also very minimal as it needs one time weeding and one time irrigation. Use of fertiliser in garlic cultivation is also very low.
While contacted Sahidul Islam, a garlic farmer of Chatnai UP of Dimla Upazila, said he cultivated garlic in one bigha of land and produced 40 maunds of the spice.
New garlic has already started to appear in the markets and its present wholesale price is Tk 1500 per maund (40kg).
DAE sources said this year's target of garlic cultivation in the district is in 794 hectares of land and production target is 5161mt at an average production of 6.50mt per hectare
