Harvesting of onion starts in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Apr 18: Harvesting of onion is going on in Nilphamari district and it would continue for about a fortnight or so.
Sources said, cultivation of the spice is increasing in the district as the farmers are gradually shifting towards cultivating high value product like this one.
Cultivation of onion is profitable as it is possible to produce even 100 maunds of it in one bigha (30 decimal) of land if proper method, high yield seed and proportionate fertiliser is used.
Onion has already started to appear in the markets of the district, price of which is hovering between Tk 1000 to Tk 1200 per maund (40 kg).
While contacted Sahidul Islam, an onion farmer of Gomnati UP of Domar upazila said, he cultivated onion in one bigha of land and he harvested 85 maunds of onion which he sold at a total price of Tk 90,000. He motioned that his total expenditure was Tk 15,000 in all.
