Taking a swipe at prominent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain, Awami League's (AL) publicity and publication secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud said Monday that Dr Kamal has no ethical point to question the legitimacy and the authority of the current parliament, reports UNB.
"Dr Kamal was a member of the constitution committee and was also an unelected member of the 1972 assembly. If an unelected law minister had the right to place the constitution then why the current parliament members won't have the legitimacy to amend the constitution'?" he posed a question.
Dr Mahmud was addressing a discussion on the country's current political situation organised by Bangabandhu Academy at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium.
"This amendment is the safeguard to judges. It ensures the authority, security and independence of judges," he said.
Terming AK Khandker a 'conspirator' and 'beneficiary' of all governments, the former minister said: "Ak Khandker must apologise to people, or else, people will dump him into the dustbin."
Held with Bangabandhu Academy general secretary Humayun Kabir Mizi in the chair, the discussion was addressed, among others, by former state minister Shamshul Haque Tuku.
BSS adds: Dr Hasan Mahmud said, "There is no scope for misleading the people on the 16th amendment to the constitution as it will also ensure protection to the judges of the highest court."
He said that BNP's founder Ziaur Rahman through a martial law ordinance introduced the supreme judicial system (Council) giving authority to it for removal of the judges which was earlier introduced by former martial ruler (administrator) Ayub Khan.
