Hasina asks party workers to keep calm until final results

Tuesday, 30 December 2008

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina asked the workers of Awami League and its front organisations to refrain from taking out any victory procession until the final results of the national elections are announced, reports UNB.
Hasina's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said that the AL president and ex-PM asked her workers "not to bring out any victory rally until the final results are announced", as initial outcome of the crucial polls gave the AL-led grand alliance a big lead.
"She also asked the party followers to exercise restraint and stay calm," Azad said.
Another message adds: AL President Sheikh Hasina who flashed V-sign after casting her vote expressed the hope that the grand alliance will get the chance of running the country after securing mandate in Monday's election.
Talking to reporters after casting vote at City College centre with her sister Sheikh Rehana at 8:30am, she also hoped that the elections will be peaceful and all will accept the results.
Hasina, however, mentioned attempts of buying votes by BNP-Jamaat candidates at many places. She heard that supporters of the 4-party alliance snatched away ballot papers in Rangpur-6 (Peerganj) constituency from where she is contesting.
"If this happens how can I believe that the elections will be free and fair," she said, adding "What the government and the election commission have done to stop these?"
Asked about the post-election violence as happened in 2001, Hasina hoped such cruel incidents would not repeat.
Hasina also called for peaceful transfer of power after the election, saying that excepting her transfer of power in 2001, every time obstructions were created.
She said whoever forms the government will ensure accountability and transparency as people no longer want to see clash and conflict.
