Hasina asks police to act impartially
Monday, 7 June 2010
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the police personnel Sunday to be impartial while performing their duties, report agencies.
"Criminals must not be spared even if they belong to my party. Don't succumb to any pressure," she told the members of the police force at a function after inaugurating the newly constructed DMP headquarters building.
The Prime Minister said criminals are a cancer for the society… of no use to society and their families. "Don't spare the criminals," she directed the police.
She also said that the members of the police force must remember their salaries and wages come from the taxes paid by the people. Hasina said police would have to be friends of the people. Their main goal would be nursing the good and punishing the evil.
"You've to look after all people irrespective of gender and religion, and whether they are literate or illiterate, rich or poor."
She said the police personnel must act in such a way that the general people never fear the police, and instead feel that police are their friends and can be trusted.
The Prime Minister congratulated the police force for their great achievement in curbing terrorism and militancy despite limited resources.
"Your attitude should not scare people, it should encourage them to have faith in you," the prime minister said.
Hasina asked the policemen to accept cases when victims go to the police stations. "Make sure that the victims can go to the police station and seek justice."
"You should also be careful so that innocent people do not face harassment," Hasina said.
She said the vehicles used in various projects could now be given to the police at the end of the projects instead of being sold off.
Home Minister Sahara Khatun, State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan, local MP Rashed Khan Menon and Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikdar were present as special guests at the function.
