Hasina castigates Khaleda for dragging in Islam during campaign

Wednesday, 24 December 2008

NARAYANGANJ, Dec 23 (UNB): Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina, who pledges to uphold Bangladesh's non-communal image, Tuesday accused her prime rival in the race for power of misleading people by dragging in Islam during the election campaign.
"People do know well who practise Islam. I don't want to say anything about it. Rather, I leave it to your judgement," she told an election rally at Osmani Stadium in Narayanganj-4 constituency from where AL candidate Sarah Begum Kabori is contesting the December 29 polls.
Hasina, who continues to focus on corruption and terrorism, said the BNP-Jamaat alliance having assumed power in 2001 adopted "terrorism-corruption" as their policy, tarnishing the country's image.
Taking swipe at BNP's election slogan "save country, save people" she alleged the BNP-Jamaat rule was marked by killing, bribery, extortion, siphoning off money and waste of resources. They forgot their election pledge after assuming power, she added.
The Awami League leader alleged that her party was not allowed to win the general election in 2001 "under a conspiracy".
She was critical of closing down the Adamjee Jute Mills during the BNP-Jamaat rule leaving thousands of workers' families on the street. "They don't know how to create, knows only how to break and spoil," she told the meeting.
Hasina, who had ruled the country for five years since 1996, said nine textile mills were handed over to labour ownerships. She pledged to build a bridge over the River Sitalakkhya, new industries in the industrial city of Narayanganj and more branches of Employment Bank for lending to unemployed youths.
Urging votes for "boat", the Awami League chief urged people to save the country from "looters". She also urged them to count each of their votes so none could rig the elections.
Hasina, who leads a grand coalition, introduced JP candidate Nasim Osman from Narayanganj-5 and Nazrul Islam Babu from Narayanganj-2 at the rally.
She also addressed rallies at Kanchpur Bridge Balur Maath seeking vote for Abdullah Kaiser from Narayanganj-3 and on the Murapara College ground in Rupganj for Gazi Golam Dastagir from Narayanganj-1.
Hasina pledged to distribute khaslands among poor people in Rupganj, make Rupganj a modern satellite town and a link road between Dhaka and Rupganj.
The Awami League chief renewed her pledge to make the country self-reliant in food and power generation, provide employment to one youth from one poor family and free education up to degree level.
Sheikh Rehana, her son Redwan Siddique Bobby and daughter Azmina Siddique Tulip, who accompanied Hasina, also sought vote for "boat".
