Hasina demands explanation about politics under restriction

Wednesday, 27 June 2007

Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina Tuesday sought explanation as to how some political parties are being allowed to do politics under restriction, slapped under the current state of emergency, reports UNB.
"It needs an explanation as to how some parties are doing politics under restriction while some will not get the opportunity," she told reporters.
Hasina came up with the questions in the wake of BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan's announcement of his party-reform proposals, and Jatiya Party Chairman Ershad and Roushan Ershad's media conferences on party reforms.
Seeking the lifting of the ban on political activities, Hasina said normal process of politics cannot move forward under the restrictions.
Meanwhile, senior Awami League leaders, including Tofael Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta and Matia Chowdhury, Tuesday told reporters that their party would also present their recipe of reform after the taboo on indoor politics goes.
Tofael Ahmed said AL's reform proposals "are not targeted at any individual" while Sengupta said their reforms are designed to reorganise the party and implement "democratic process" in the party.
Matia Chowdhury viewed that the proposed reforms could only be placed at party central committee, otherwise, she said, "any reform proposal would only raise the question of its legitimacy."
Meanwhile, bdnews24.com adds: Awami League (AL) reform proposals might also be presented to the media before being placed in the party forum, as was in the case of the BNP, AL Joint General Secretary and Acting General Secretary Mukul Bose told the news agency Tuesday.
He welcomed BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan's reform proposals.
