Hasina demands withdrawal of cases filed against Nachol farmers

Sunday, 8 July 2007

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina urged the government to ensure supply of fertiliser for the fertiliser-hungry farmers and demanded withdrawal of the mass case filed against about 5,000 farmers of Nachol.
In a written statement Saturday, the former Prime Minister said that any government has the obligation to assist the farmers through ensuring supply of agri-inputs as they make an important contribution to national development.
Police filed the case against the large number of farmers on charge of ransacking and setting fire to the UNO office of Nachol Upazila of Chapainawabganj district Wednesday.
"Filing cases against farmers for demanding fertiliser at fair price is not acceptable on any logical ground. Likewise, any death in safe custody or in prison is not admissible-it's unconstitutional and inhuman," said Hasina.
She called upon the caretaker government to ensure immediate supply of fertilisers to the farmers.
