The Election Commission (EC) has enlisted detained former prime minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina as voter Monday.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (Prisons) Major Shamsul Haider Siddiqui confirmed the listing of Hasina as voter in the evening, reports UNB.
However, Siddiqui said another detained former premier and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, might be enlisted within a day or two. "The time has not been fixed yet."
Sheikh Hasina's lawyer, Khandakar Maniruzzaman, told the news agency that the AL president has given her consent to get enlisted on the voters' list.
"She told me, when I last met her four days back, that she would register her name on the voters' list," he said.
Maniruzzaman said he provided Sheikh Hasina's tax PIN and passport number and blood group to the DIG as the latter Monday made a call to him asking for the information.
Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia's family lawyer Advocate Ahmed Azam told the news agency that no discussion on the matter (getting enlisted) took place between Khaleda Zia and him when he last visited her.
However, Deputy Election Commissioner of Dhaka Biswas Lutfar Rahman told the news agency that he was not yet informed anything about the two detained former premiers' enrolment on the voters' list.
Election Officer of Dhaka District-2 Faisal Kader said the jail authorities are conducting the entire process of enlisting detainees as voters.
