Hasina hailed for her climate change role

Wednesday, 23 July 2014

Shadow Foreign Secretary of the UK Douglas Alexander has lauded the role of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Copenhagen, and was looking forward to seeing her due role and participation in the COP 21 to be held in Paris next year. Douglas Alexander, also an MP from British Labour Party, expressed this when he called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Hotel Hilton on Park Lane on Tuesday afternoon. Hasina is now on a three-day official tour to the UK to attend the first Girl Summit. Appreciating the economic advancement of Bangladesh, Douglas said Bangladesh is moving ahead. He also lauded the participation of Sheikh Hasina at the Girl Summit, 2014 as they have full support to the movement of ending child and forced marriage as well as FGM. In a joint briefing after the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary AKM Shamim Chowdhury and Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque said the British opposition party MP lauded the Prime Minister’s role in the climate change debate in Copenhagen and expressed his interest about Sheikh Hasina’s participation and due role in the next COP in Paris. In response, Hasina said since Bangladesh is a vulnerable country to climate change, there is a need for working continuously in this regard. Expressing disappointment to some extent as the developed countries have not provided their promised support and fund to the affected countries for minimising climate change impacts, she said Bangladesh is working on its climate change action plan with own resources. ‘We’ll continue to work with other countries, including the UK, to minimise climate change impacts,’ she added, according to UNB.
