Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi embraced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when they met for the first time Monday. The warm embrace perhaps indicated they had something in common--both lost their illustrious fathers to assassins’ bullets. Suu Kyi, the chairperson of the National League for Democracy held 30-minute meeting with Hasina at the country’s parliament complex. Suu Kyi was seen holding Hasina’s hand as she escorted the Bangladesh leader to her vehicle after their meeting.
Hasina is currently in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw to take part in the third BIMSTEC summit. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional grouping of seven members from South Asia - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka - and South East Asia -Thailand and Myanmar. Hasina was given a red carpet reception at the airport after she reached there on Monday morning. She then met President Thein Sein at the presidential palace at noon, according to a news agency.
