Hasina, Khaleda face 'no organised threat': IGP
Thursday, 25 December 2008
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Noor Mohammad said the threats against Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia "are not from any organised source", reports bdnews24.com.
"Leaflets and CDs recovered from extremists do have threats aimed at the two leaders, but these sources are not organised," Noor Mohammad said after a meeting with Home Adviser MA Matin Wednesday.
The IGP said all aspects of security during the election were discussed with the adviser. He also said: "A strict security belt is being created nevertheless considering their safety, and everything will be done in this regard."
MA Matin also termed 'baseless' any security fear becoming potential election spoilers. "All concerned have been given orders to maintain strict security," he said.
RAB Director General Hassan Mahmud Khondokar, briefing reporters after the meeting, said: "Two extremists were arrested with explosives from Comilla, not far away from Khaleda Zia's rally. At this moment drives are underway with the help of those detained."
He also said they were caught and arrested due to efficient actions of RAB, and now the matter is under investigation.
The RAB DG also dispelled the probability of security concerns hampering the election campaigns of the former prime ministers.
Home Secretary Abdul Karim was also present at the meeting.
Meanwhile, another report of UNB from Comilla said security arrangements were beefed up Wednesday in areas bordering India following the arrest of militants and recovery of grenades in the district.
