Hasina receives Indira Gandhi Award

NEW DELHI, Jan 12 (UNB): Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was awarded Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2009 at a state ceremony here Tuesday, marking her maiden visit to India after her election through Bangladesh's democratic transition.
Indian President Pratibha Patil handed over the prestigious prize to the Bangladesh Premier at the high-profile function at Rashtrapati Bhaban.
Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi, among others, attended the cutting-edge function.
Bangabandhu's youngest daughter Sheikh Rehana, Prime Minister's son Sajeeb Wajed Joy, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen, advisers to the Prime Minister HT Imam, Mashiur Rahman and Gawher Rizvi, Ambassador-at-Large Mohammad Ziauddin, Principal Secretary to the Pime Minister MA Karim, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, Dhirendra Debnath Shambu MP, Swechchhasebak League general secretary Pankaj Devnath were, among others, present.
On her arrival at the President House, President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi received Sheikh Hasina.
The national anthem of India was played to herald the occasion. Sheikh Hasina received the gold medal of the Indira Gandhi Peace Award and a cheque for 2.5 million rupees.
Addressing the function, the visiting Prime Minister said, "I am deeply honoured on being awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2009."
