Hasina seeks Russian help to set up power plants, repair old ones

ST PETERSBURG (Russia), Nov 24 (UNB): Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday sought cooperation and assistance from Russia to set up new power plants and repair the old ones.
She expressed her desire during a bilateral meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at his Petersburg residence.
PM's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad after meeting told reporters that both the leaders talked about the proposed Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant.
Hasina said that more than 40 per cent power plants in Bangladesh had been constructed by the assistance of the Russian government.
She also expressed her willingness to sign a long-term agreement on food grains and fertiliser.
Hasina invited her Russian counterpart to visit Bangladesh at his convenient time. Putin accepted the invitation.
The prime Minister paid glowing tributes to the 40 Russian soldiers who died while demining the Chittagong Port after Liberation war.
Hasina expressed her gratitude to the Russian government for their valuable support during the Liberation War in 1971.
She also sought cooperation from the Russian government for training of the defence personnel and in gas exploration.
Hasina said that Russia and Bangladesh are working together against terrorism.
Putin said that the issues of Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant and long term agreement on food grains and fertiliser would be discussed during the overall bilateral issues at the earliest.
