Hasina starts polls campaign after visiting shrines in Sylhet

Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina offered fateha at the mazars of Muslim saints in holy city Sylhet Thursday before kicking off her campaign for the crucial December 29 parliament elections. On the other hand, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is all set to launch her election campaign today (Friday) after visiting the shrines, report agencies.
UNB says: Former Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina first reached the mazar of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) at 12:30pm and offered fateha. Then she visited the mazars of Hazrat Shahparan (R) and Shah Borhan Uddin (R).
Earlier in the morning, she left Dhaka for Sylhet by road to pay homage to the holy men.
On last occasions also, she had kicked off her election campaigns after offering fateha at the mazars.
Large crowds, including Awami League leaders and activists, stood on both sides of the streets and welcomed her by waving their hands.
AL supporters led by party-candidate Mahmudus Samad Chowdhury Kayes for the national polls from Sylhet-3 constituency escorted the private car carrying Sheikh Hasina and welcomed her in the city.
On her arrival, security measures were stepped up in the holy city with police guards posted at different crossings and lanes.
Meanwhile, bdnews24.com adds: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will launch her campaign today after visiting the shrines of Shah Jalal ®, Shah Paran ® and Shah Borhan Uddin ®.
"She will speak at eight public rallies after paying respects at the three shrines," said Maruf Kamal Khan, chief of Khaleda's information cell.
Khaleda is scheduled to speak at South Surma College, Doyamir field in Osmani Nagar, Aushkandi High School in Nabiganj, Mirpur Ali Sobhan College at Bahubal, Habiganj Municipality field, Madhabpur Pilot High School and Brahmanbaria College.
The former Prime Minister has launched all her previous election campaigns after visiting the shrines in Sylhet.
Khaleda Zia will announce the BNP manifesto Saturday (December 13), at the Dhaka Sheraton Hotel at 4:00pm.
