Wednesday, 17 September 2014

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will co-chair a US organised peacekeeping summit on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 26. Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali on Wednesday said she would co-chair the summit with the US vice-president Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and Rwanda President Paul Kagame. Briefing journalists ahead of the general assembly, Ali said the US had invited the Prime Minister to co-chair the event, praising her ‘personal commitment to the peace and development and Bangladesh’s contribution to the UN peacekeeping’. Ali said this marks a diplomatic success for Bangladesh. Hasina will leave Dhaka for New York to attend the UN general assembly on Sept 21 and a series of high-level meetings until Sept 28, according to a news agency.
