Hasina under parole won't sit with free Khaleda: Zillur

Sunday, 14 September 2008

Awami League (AL) acting president Zillur Rahman Saturday demanded immediate, unconditional and permanent release of Sheikh Hasina, saying their party chief under parole will not sit across the table with "free Khaleda Zia", reports UNB.
"Hasina is yet to be released permanently. But Khaleda is moving like a free bird. Under such circumstances, there cannot be any meeting between Hasina and Khaleda," Zillur said.
He was replying to questions from journalists at his Gulshan residence when Jubo League leaders went to meet him.
Zillur said, "A meeting between the two can be held when Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia will be treated equally by the country's law."
"But it is Sheikh Hasina who herself after her permanent release will decide whether she will talk to Khaleda or not," he said.
Zillur came down heavily on the caretaker government, as it is releasing the nucleus persons behind massive corruption in the country, but still confining the pro-liberation and honest people in jail.
"The political changeover of 1/11 was a result of Awami League's movement against corruption and irregularities. But after that AL leaders and workers have been thrown into jail and tortured," he said.
He asked the government to free all AL detainees, including its central leaders Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Jubo League chairman Jahangir Kabir Nanak and general secretary Mirza Azam.
Zillur also asked the government to lift the state of emergency before the polls reaffirming the party stand that no other election before the parliamentary polls would be acceptable.
Asked when Sheikh Hasina might return, he said the former Premier is likely to come back home in the last week of the current month or after Eid, in case of any complexity.
AL presidium member Amir Hossain Amu, who was also present with Zillur Rahman, placed a different condition for holding the Hasina-Khaleda meeting.
"The meeting between Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina could be considered, if Khaleda comes to Hasina's residence," Amu said.
He said there is no need to keep the jail gates closed after Tarique Rahman's release. "How unfortunate the matter is! Tarique Rahman who was the champion of corruption is now free, while the country's brave sons like Nanak and Azam are still facing false allegations of corruption."
Amu said that Tarique by quitting politics has himself admitted that he was one of the key persons behind all massive corruptions. About Khaleda Zia's vow to oust corrupts from BNP, Amu said who will oust Khaleda, as all corruptions took place centering her.
Adbur Razzak said no congenial atmosphere would be created in the country ahead of the national polls unless Hasina is released.
