Hasina urges Khaleda to shun politics of vengeance

Wednesday, 13 October 2010

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina called upon leader of the opposition Begum Khaleda Zia to shun the politics of vengeance saying that the people of the country want peace.
"Don't take revenge on the people for not casting their votes in favour of your party in the last national elections. Let us work for the welfare of the people," she said.
Hasina urged the countrymen not to pay heed to the opposition's propaganda against the government.
The PM was speaking at a function marking the founding anniversary of Jatiya Sramik League at Ganobhaban Tuesday.
Referring to the upazila chairman murder incident in Natore, she said the leader of the opposition needed dead body to protect her corrupt sons and former ministers, who were convicted in money laundering cases by the US federal court.
Hasina asked how Khaleda will make it believable that this killing was not her intra-party conflict.
Referring to the recent gunfight between two factions of Jubo Dal in Comilla, Hasina posed a question to the BNP chief as to who were the masked people with firearms in their hands.
About Monday's accident where at least five persons were killed when they came under the wheels of an intercity train Hasina questioned why the BNP has arranged the rally just beside the rail line.
She said it was the old trick of the opposition leader and her party's attitude to get dead bodies even from her own party to create an issue of movement.
"Don't be angry with the people and stop taking revenge on them. Let us do our duties for the welfare of the people," she said.
Hasina said BNP came to power through an illegal way, adding, "A party which took birth illicitly cannot bring welfare for the people."
Criticizing former President Ziaur Rahman to grab state power through promulgating martial law, she said it was Zia who killed hundreds of armed forces members in a bid to secure his power. "Bangladesh never witnessed such heinous killings of members of armed forces. Even family members of those killed did not get the dead bodies," she said.
Hasina, in the function, underscored the need for flourishing both public and private sector industries to bring dynamism in the economy through fair competition between the two sectors.
Referring to the decoding of genome sequencing of jute by the Bangladeshi scientists, Hasina said the demand of environment-friendly jute and jute goods was increasing globally day by day. In Bangladesh, a total of 35 types of goods were being produced from jute, she added.
Jatiya Sramik League President Matin Sarkar and General Secretary Roy Ramesh attended the function, while Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan and state minister for Labour and Employment Begum Munnujan Sufian, among others, were present.
