CHITTAGONG, May 27 (bdnews24.com): Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina has asked the Chittagong leaders to forget their past disputes and jointly work for mayoral candidate ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury to win the upcoming Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls.
AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Haque Hanif briefed reporters Thursday morning, following a one-hour meeting, hosted by the party chief at her official residence, Ganabhaban, with party leaders from Chittagong ahead of the June 17 CCC elections.
Leaders who stood against Mohiuddin's nomination were called to the meeting, including Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, who had submitted nomination papers for the polls.
Following the meeting Hanif said Rezaul would also work for Mohiuddin.
Rezaul had earlier suggested that Awami League and Mohiuddin were synonymous, "now the things have changed."
The conflict between Mohiuddin and Nurul Islam had peaked ahead of the elections. His followers had declared three candidates, all of whom had collected nomination papers but only Rezaul had submitted that.
Central AL leaders have already endorsed Mohiuddin, who is seeking an unprecedented fourth term as mayor.
Mohiuddin is contesting for the polls as a candidate of Nagorik Committee.
Hanif told reporters after Thursday's meeting they had discussed ways to work for Mohiuddin.
There might be many opinions within a major party like Awami League, but "if we work concertedly and forget past disputes it will be possible for our Chittagong candidate to win," the AL leader said.
Mohiuddin told reporters: "We will work under one platform from today (Thursday) following her (Sheikh Hasina's) direction."
Mohammad Ishaq, president of the polls management committee, said there should not be any more bickering among the local leaders after the meeting.
Kazi Enamul Haque Danu, general secretary of Chittagong metropolitan AL and election management committee secretary general, agreed adding, "We will win the polls if we follow the leader's direction."
State Minister for Environment and Forests Hasan Mahmud, who is a Chittagong MP, said that AL would work jointly for Mohiuddin in Chittagong to win the polls.
Among others present in the meeting were MPs Fazle Karim Chowdhury, Mosharraf Hossain and Akhteruzzman Babu.
City AL vice president and Chittagong-8 MP Nurul Islam BSc and MP from Chittagong-10 MA Latif are currently abroad.
