Hasina's wealth estimated at Tk 20 million

Monday, 6 August 2007

Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina's personal wealth is estimated at Tk 20 million (2 crore) including Tk 11.90 million (1.19 crore) interest of savings from 1981, her counsel Sunday disclosed it in the city to reporters, reports UNB.
Hasina, who was detained on July 16 in an extortion case, did not sign the draft wealth statements prepared by her tax lawyer Moniruzzaman, as it lacks correct information.
The revised statement of her wealth will have to be submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) by August 8.
After meeting with Hasina in the makeshift jail in the parliament-building complex, Moniruzzaman said, "She asked me to meet her again tomorrow (Monday) after correcting some information in the statements."
He said Sheikh Hasina has been facing difficulties in preparing an accurate statement as all the documents were seized from her Sudha Sadan residence immediately after her arrest on July 16 and she did not get any cooperation from the Bangladesh Bank and the ACC.
Moniruzzaman said the AL chief has accounts in eight banks. She received Tk 1.19 crore bank interests since her return in 1981. Hasina refuted some newspaper reports that she has a total of around Tk 300 million (30 crore) in 36 accounts. "It is completely false. She has only eight accounts. "
He said Hasina's wealth also include two jeeps and some lands in her ancestral home at Tungipara, which she asked him to donate the poor people who are presently using those lands. The lawyer said the AL chief does not posses any wealth and she does not have even lands or house in Dhaka.
Moniruzzaman who had more than two-hour consultations from 4:00 pm on preparation of her wealth statements said as the security personnel took different documents from her residence on July 16, she could not get all of her wealth accounts.
Saying that the ACC and the Bangladesh Bank are not cooperating with her in preparing the statement and informing the wealth accounts, he said if he gets cooperation from the ACC, he could submit Hasina's wealth accounts by August 8.
