Hasina's wealth statement to be submitted today

Wednesday, 8 August 2007

Detained Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina is likely to show assets worth about Tk 20 million in her wealth statement to be submitted to the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) today (Wednesday), reports UNB.
The former Prime Minister, who was detained on July 16 in an extortion case, acknowledged the three-page statement, prepared by her tax lawyer Moniruzzaman.
It will have to be submitted to the ACC through jail authorities.
After a three-hour meeting with Hasina at the special jail on the compound of Jatiya Sangsad, Moniruzzaman said the AL chief did not yet know about High Court stay order on the operation of the ACC notice asking her to submit her wealth statement.
"Anyway, she would submit her statement voluntarily."
"I've prepared an approximate wealth statement by evaluating previous years' accounts as the ACC and the Bangladesh Bank are not cooperating with us in preparing and getting account information of the AL chief. Besides, all the documents were seized from her house on July 16," the lawyer said.
Moniruzzaman said Hasina's assets include two jeeps and some lands in Tungipara and a jute store house in Khulna but the AL chief does not have any land or house in Dhaka. The land in Tungipara that she had inherited was donated to poor people.
He said Hasina has eight accounts in three banks and she has no liability and undisclosed and illegal money.
Moniruzzaman said Sheikh Hasina is eager to meet her ailing husband Wajed Miah, who is now undergoing treatment at a city hospital since her arrest, and it depends on government response.
