CHITTAGONG, Apr 05: Global recession has hard hit the hatchery industry of the country as 22 hatcheries out 58 have been closed down and the remaining units are shutting down gradually.
To get out of the crisis, Shrimp Hatchery Association of Bangladesh (SHAB) placed a 10-point memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar for submission to the prime minister.
SHAB sources said, shrimp sector of Bangladesh particularly hatchery industry has been passing through a critical juncture. Shrimp is the second biggest export item of the country which fetches foreign currency worth around Tk 45 billion annually. Hatchery industry is the main contributor to the shrimp sector.
Shrimp sector is now facing disaster and volume of export of shrimp has alarmingly declined due to world wide economic downtrend.
Moreover, reduction of land for shrimp production, incessant load-shedding, excess expenditures on procurement of diesel for operating generator, pressure of adjusting bank loan etc have led to this deplorable situation in the industry.
SHAB sources expressed concern at the shutting down of 22 hatcheries and called for including hatchery industry in the package, which is likely to be formulated by the government for rescuing different industries of the country.
