Hawkers' bid to reoccupy Gulistan roads, footpaths

FE REPORT | Thursday, 15 September 2022

Some hawkers were seen selling goods on the roads and footpaths in the city's Gulistan area on Wednesday.
Earlier, the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) evicted the hawkers from the Gulistan area on Tuesday to keep smooth vehicular movement and pedestrians in the area.
Earlier, the mayor of DSCC Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said they will mark city roads (within his jurisdiction) as red, yellow and green zones to keep the city roads free from traffic jams and smooth vehicular movement.
In the red zone hawkers will not be allowed to occupy the roads and nearby footpaths.
Meanwhile, pedestrians welcomed the DSCC's move as they could move on the footpaths freely.
They called upon the authority to keep Gulistan's footpaths and roads free from further encroachment by hawkers and vendors.
A high official of DSCC told the FE that they will intensify their drive to prevent regrouping of hawkers.
