The fire that broke out at a leather godown of Phoenix Leather at Hazaribag in the capital on Friday was brought under control around 4:45pm with two and a half hours of fraction efforts by 12 fire service units.
However, no casualties were reported.
Duty officer of Fire Service Control Room Rozina Akter said 12 firefighting units rushed to the spot and managed to put out the blaze around 4:45 pm after around two and a half hours frantic efforts.
She also said the fire erupted around 2:14pm on the fifth floor of a seven-storey building that houses the leader godown.
The army, Border Guard Bangladesh, police, and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel were assisting the fire extinguishing attempts as of filing this report around 6:30pm. The cause of the fire could be ascertained after investigation.
An official at Hazaribag Police Station said the persons who were trapped inside the building were rescued unhurt.
Director (operations and maintenance) of Fire Service Lt Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury told the media on the spot that there were no safety arrangements in the building.
He said it was an old building that stored raw materials, plastics, garments and other miscellaneous items. Many people would have died if the fire had spilled into adjoining structures or buildings, but the danger could somehow be averted.
