HC asks Central Hospital's Dr Mili to surrender

FE REPORT | Thursday, 6 July 2023

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday ordered Dr Maksuda Farida Akhter Mili, a gynecologist of the Central Hospital, to surrender within four weeks in a case filed filed on charge of negligence of duty that led to the death of a newborn and its mother.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Biswajit Debnath passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by Dr Mili in the case.
The High Court, however, asked the law enforcers not to harass and not to arrest her by this time.
Lawyer Yusuf Hossain Humanyun appeared in the court hearing on behalf of Dr Mili, while Deputy Attorney General Sujit Chatterjee Bappi represented the state.
The newborn of Mahbuba Akter Akhi died while she was undergoing C-section in the hospital on June 10. Akhi, 25, who was later taken to LabAid Hospital and had been on life support there, died on June 18.
Accused Dr Maksuda submitted the bail petition recently to the HC through her lawyers, saying that she was not present in the hospital on June 10 and was not involved in the C-section of Akhi.
Akhi's husband Yakub Ali filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station on June 14 accusing the doctors and the hospital authorities for the botched C-section. A Dhaka court on June 15 sent two physicians Shahzadi Mustarshida Sultana and Muna Shaha to jail in the case.
