HC asks for relevant documents

FE Report | Wednesday, 21 May 2014

The High Court (HC) sought Tuesday relevant documents, under or by which the government allowed the duty-free import of cars for the Members of Parliament (MPs), a lawyer concerned said.
After hearing on a writ petition filed Monday regarding its legality, the HC bench comprising Justice Dr Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain sought the documents from the petitioner.
"The HC allowed me two weeks' time to collect the relevant documents from the government and submit those before the court as affidavit," Advocate Dr Md Eunus Ali Akond, who filed the petition, told the FE.
At the same time, the HC bench adjourned the hearing on the writ petition for two weeks, he said.
Before filing the writ petition, Mr Akond served a legal notice on the government requesting it not to allow the duty-free car import for MPs, and seeking relevant circulars. "But the government didn't respond to the request," he said.
Challenging legality of allowing duty-free car import for MPs, the writ petition said that the matter was contradictory with the Articles 7, 19, 26, 27, 31 and 68 of the Constitution.
The petitioner prayed for an HC rule upon the government as to why the decision allowing the duty-free import of cars for MPs should not be declared illegal.
At the same time, the petitioner also sought the HC order to the government to maintain status quo over the duty-free car import for MPs until disposal of the rule.
