Tuesday, 11 November 2008

The High Court (HC) Monday asked the government not to arrest or harass AFM Bahauddin Nasim, president of Awami Swechchhasebak League, and Alauddin Ahmed Chowdhury, APS to ex-leader of the opposition in parliament Sheikh Hasina, without due process of law, reports UNB.
A division bench, comprising Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Farah Mahbub, passed the orders following separate writ petitions challenging the 'arbitrary' actions of the police.
"The HC also disposed of the writ petitions by its orders," said Barrister Shafique Ahmed, counsel for the petitioners.
Earlier Sunday, the same HC bench had asked Bahauddin along with Awami Jubo League president Jahangir Kabir Nanak and ex-Chhatra League president Liaqat Shikder, facing criminal cases, to surrender to lower court within 10 weeks.
It had also directed the police to refrain from arresting or harassing them during the period.
The HC orders came when they surrendered before it seeking bails.
