HC drops contempt hearing against DU VC

Tuesday, 18 September 2018

The High Court (HC) has dropped from the cause list a contempt of court petition filed against the Dhaka University (DU) vice-chancellor for not taking steps to arrange election to the DU Central Students' Union (Ducsu) in compliance with its earlier directives, reports UNB.
An HC bench of Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Dr KM Hafizul Alam declined to hear the petition and dropped it from the cause list following a brawl between Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and petitioner's lawyer Advocate Manzill Murshid.
On September 12, Advocate Manzill Murshid filed the petition on behalf of those who had filed a writ petition over the issue.
Earlier on September 04, he served a contempt of court notice to the DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman, Proctor Dr AKM Golam Rabbani and Treasurer Dr Kamal Uddin for not taking steps to arrange election to Ducsu in compliance with its earlier directives.
On January 17 last, the HC asked the DU authorities to take necessary steps within the next six months to hold Ducsu election.
A writ petition was filed by 25 students of DU in March 2012 seeking its order to compel the authorities concerned to arrange the Ducsu election.
