HC excuses Sohul's presence in contempt case

Friday, 8 October 2010

Election Commissioner Md Sohul Hossain has been relieved from having to be physically present during the proceedings of the court contempt case against him, reports bdnews24.com.
A High Court (HC) bench of justices AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain gave the order Thursday, based on a petition by the commissioner.
The bench also set the next hearing date for October 20.
Awami League (AL) MP Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir filed the court contempt petition against Sohul on September 28.
Based on Alamgir's petition, the HC summoned Sohul on October 7 to answer why punitive actions would not be taken against him for defaming the court.
On September 26, Sohul said: "Our decision to publish the gazette was right and it corresponds with the court (Supreme Court) order. We will confront the issue legally, as the HC has stayed effectiveness of this gazette."
